Pilgrim Beart BSc. FIET
Pilgrim is a technology innovator with a string of connected-product startups under his belt – some of which have been successful!
Pilgrim Beart FIET has led innovation for nearly 30 years in Connected Product companies, each at a scale of 1-100m+ customers. His startups include antenova (multi-band smartphone antennas sold in the billions), AlertMe (Connected Home platform managing millions of devices which powers British Gas Hive and Lowes’ Iris, sold for $100m in 2015) and DevicePilot (a service which manages connected devices, thus helping companies to scale-up).
Pilgrim Beart has a passion to change the world for the better. He has about 30 years’ experience leading innovation in ground breaking, high-technology companies, five of which he has co-founded. After a degree in Computer Engineering, Pilgrim designed innovative computer systems at start-ups in Cambridge and Oxford, then for six years led technology teams in three start-ups in Silicon Valley. In 1998 he headed back to his home town of Cambridge, UK where over the past 17+ years he has co-founded five companies: activeRF (indoor location systems), antenova (multi-band smartphone antenna systems), Splashpower (wireless charging), DevicePilot (IoT device management). Pilgrim is a Fellow of the IET and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory.

Pilgrim Beart FIET is CEO of DevicePilot, an service which manages connected devices at scale. Pilgrim enjoys figuring-out how to turn novel technology into product that ships in volume, innovating in areas often significantly before there is a recognised market. In his early career he designed chips, then software, then services at disruptive technology start-ups in Cambridge, Oxford and then Silicon Valley, and is named inventor on more than 40 granted patents worldwide in areas as diverse as antenna systems, emergent systems and wireless power transfer.
In 1998 he created his first startup activeRF Ltd (an early player in real-time location systems), soon followed by antenova Ltd (multi-band antenna systems which have shipped in volumes of billions in mobile devices e.g. BlackBerry). Splashpower (with Lily Cheng and James Hay) was a wireless charging startup which created much of the fundamental IP used in this field today. In 2006 Pilgrim co-founded AlertMe Ltd, a Smart Home platform co-founded with Adrian Critchlow which closed several very large deals with utilities and retailers in Europe and US, shipped more than a million units into US & UK homes and exited in 2015 for $100m. In 2013 Pilgrim co-founded DevicePilot and he now heads-up this leading service provider.
Pilgrim has a BSc. in Computer Engineering from City University, London, has sat on the Board of various not-for-profit enterprises such as Full Moon, Cambridge Network and CEDIG, has given numerous prestigious talks including delivering the 2012 IET Clerk Maxwell lecture and speaking to the Foundation for Science and Technology at the House of Lords. Pilgrim has been a Visiting Fellow at the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory and is a Fellow of the Innovation Awards.
